Do More: Volunteer with JF&CS

Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer. – Author unknown

Not a day goes by when I don’t see the impact of volunteers in our community. How wonderful to live in a place where people so often do more.

Whether giving their time on a regular basis or providing a particular skill when needed, volunteers help JF&CS in many ways with our Squirrel Hill Community Food Pantry, Refugee Services, Career Development Center, board and committee leadership and more. I cannot thank you enough for being of service.

I would like to introduce a new JF&CS volunteer opportunity with our Friend in Deed program.

JF&CS’s Friend in Deed officially began last year on a trial basis. Recognizing an increased need for companion services to help area seniors, we’re now expanding this important program.

As Friend in Deed grows to serve more seniors, who often feel isolated in their homes, there is also an ever-expanding need for caring and compassionate volunteers. We are actively recruiting volunteers and need your help. I invite you to become a trained companion volunteer for a senior in your neighborhood and to pass this information along to others able to help.

Friend in Deed volunteer opportunities include:

  • Friendly visits with a senior
  • Transportation to doctor appointments, the grocery store and other places
  • Canine visits with therapy dogs (TDI certification required

As a Friend in Deed volunteer, your commitment is based on your availability — days or evening, weekdays or weekends. Our program coordinator, Laura Burns, will train and work with each volunteer to create an opportunity that works for everyone involved, no matter how much time you can contribute.

Friend in Deed volunteers provide much more than a service. By simply offering companionship and support, they’re helping our community’s older adults maintain their independence and age with dignity…what an amazing outcome for all involved.

To become a Friend in Deed volunteer, contact Laura Burns, program coordinator, at 412.904.5971. Thank you for doing more so generously and eagerly.
